TBPXL Future-Oriented Neighborhoods

Regenerative, Scalable, Collaborative

Regenerative, Scalable, Collaborative - A PXL Research Initiative - Expertise Center for Construction & Industry

Our Vision

Regenerative neighborhoods give more than they take - ecologically, socially, and economically. They thrive on integrated approaches that harmonize space, ecology, energy, mobility, social behavior, and local economies.

Our mission: Accelerate the realization of such neighborhoods through better dialogue, aligned collaboration, and systemic tools.

"From vision to permitted reality - faster, smarter, together."
Ecological

Restoring natural systems and biodiversity

Social

Building community and social cohesion

Economic

Creating local economic resilience

Circular

Closing resource loops

Why?

Addressing fragmentation through collaboration

Current Challenges

Today, neighborhood development faces delays, misalignment, and resistance - not due to a lack of ambition, but fragmented collaboration between:

  • Governments (policy/permitting)
  • Developers & Architects
  • Residents & Communities
  • Researchers & Industry

Result: Slow permitting, lost quality, and missed opportunities for scalable, regenerative solutions.

Our Solution

We bridge the gaps between these stakeholders through:

  • Systemic analysis of inefficiencies
  • Co-creation methodologies
  • Digital dialogue tools
  • Real-world testing in Flemish contexts

Themes

Based on our research framework

Systemic Challenges

Where do inefficiencies arise? Energy, mobility, water, circularity, space usage, local economy, or community dynamics?

Biggest bottleneck: Slow permitting? Lack of shared vision? Resistance to change?

Human & Spatial Dynamics

What defines a successful neighborhood? Resident behavior, spatial design, community interaction, or affordability?

Challenge: Expected vs. actual use of shared spaces.

Regenerative Feasibility

Is "giving more than taking" achievable today? Exploring levers in energy, ecology, social sharing, economy, or spatial design.

Barriers: Policy? Financial? Cultural resistance?

Collaboration & Tools

Where is the most time lost? Pre-consultation? Permitting? Decision-making? Stakeholder alignment?

Digital tools: Dialogue tools (e.g., Digi Woon-Wijs) to visualize impacts, align stakeholders, and speed up permitting.

Approach

Practical methodologies and tools

What We're Developing

  • Bridge gaps between construction projects and neighborhoods
  • Visualize interactions via Digi Woon-Wijs proof-of-concept
  • Streamline processes for faster, socially embedded solutions
  • Test in real-world cases (Flemish rural contexts, with European relevance)

Methods

  • Action Research + Systemic Lenses
  • Co-creation with municipalities, developers, and researchers
  • Student involvement (workplace learning, theses)
